Dear Reader,

Have you ever wondered how books are titled?  Who comes up with the name and how it’s decided upon?  Mostly it’s up to the author to make suggestions, then it goes to editorial, where they either chose a title from the list the author submitted or make new suggestions, based on the marketing of the book.

Thinking up titles has always been a challenge for me.  I never seem to have just the right one floating around in my head.  I appreciate that it’s not solely up to me.  Some of my favourite titles were created by editors or marketing executives.

But I have to say, Lost and Found Husband came naturally to me for this book.  I titled the first book in my Family Renewal duet lost and Found Father because the hero in that story had given up his baby daughter for adoption and was being reunited with her eighteen years later.  In this book, the hero (who is that child’s adoptive parent) was once a happy and well-adjusted husband who’d tragically lost his wife.  Now he is in a position to be a husband all over again, to start fresh, to regain the joy that he’d lost, only with someone new.

So…I give you Lost and Found Husband, a book with an emotionally wounded hero and the lovely young woman who helps him find his way back home.

Hugs and Happily Ever after,

Sheri WhiteFeather

Rust Creek Ramblings

I’m sure you’ve heard there is a new doctor in town. Sexy Jon Clifton looks more cowboy than paediatrician, he’s good with kids and dogs, and what we all want to know is: Why is this man still single?

Though there are plenty of ladies in Rust Creek Falls who would like to change the confirmed bachelor’s status, Dawn Laramie alone seems to be immune to his charms. The dedicated nurse works side by side with Dr. Jon day after day, intent on keeping things professional…and distant. Meanwhile, we here at the Gazette can practically hear the tension thrumming between these two. Our diagnosis? A classic case of lovesickness with an age-old cure! But will the doctor’s proposal heal Dawn’s wounded heart?

Dear Reader,

I’ve written before about my four brothers and how close my bond is with them.  We also had a sister and lost her to cancer a number of years ago.  I miss her very much and regret not being able to share with her all of life’s highs and lows the way only sisters can.

In Her Maverick M.D. sibling relationships play an important role in getting the hero and heroine together.  Paediatric nurse Dawn Laramie and her sister, Marina, shared a childhood that didn’t include their father because mostly he stood them up for Christmas, birthdays or even visitations.  The experience cemented their loyalty to each other – and also made it difficult for Dawn to trust a man with her heart.  But her sister is the one who encourages her to keep an open mind about a happy-ever-after.  Dr Jonathan Clifton is more geek than smooth-talking charmer.  He’s more into logic than complicated feelings, and reluctant to jeopardize the work environment with romance…until some sage advice from his brother tips the scales towards love.

The relationship between Dawn and Jon was so much fun to write, but I also found a wonderful connection to other characters in the book.  And for me it was lovely to put on the page the girlie bond of sisters that I missed out on with my own.

I hope you enjoy Dawn and Jon’s story as much as I did writing it.

Happy Reading!

Beauty and the man who’ll never let her go…

On paper, this should have been the perfect arrangement.

Elise Bravo needed a job, desperately. And soldier turned thriller writer Jed Walsh burned through—almost literally, it turned out—assistants like hellfire through brimstone. Turned out he had some…unusual work habits to go along with his giant talent and ego. He threw knives to relax. He cleaned his guns as he acted out scenes. And more than anything, he hated cats…

Enter Elise, crack typist, master plotter and perfect for the live-in job in every way but one…two if you count Mr. Wiggles, her furry companion. For though Jed had sworn he would never get “involved” with a woman who worked for him, it took only a day or two with the perfectly professional, pencil skirt–wearing Bravo beauty to realize that he needed to keep Elise—in his bed, in his house and in his life. And the first step was building Mr. Wiggles a catio—because maybe there was more than one way for Jed to make Elise his.

Dear Reader,

Elise Bravo needs a high-paying job to put herself back on track after a series of losses in life, in business and in love.  Jed Walsh needs the perfect assistant.  He’s a world-famous thriller writer with a specific writing process:  he dictates his stories to his assistant.

Unfortunately, Jed is big and gruff and scary, a real beast of a man.  He’s having serious trouble keeping a typist; they tend to run away screaming.

And then Elise shows up at Jed’s door to apply for the job no other assistant has been able to keep.  She’s a whiz on the keyboards and he doesn’t intimidate her.  Jed may be hard to deal with, but he pays a lot.

It’s only supposed to be a temporary solution.  She’ll type his overdue book, make all that money and go back to her own life.

But then slowly, Elise begins to realize that she’s falling for her secretly softened beast of a boss.  As for Jed, he’s decided that, no matter what it takes or how much it costs him, he’s never letting Elise go…

I hope you enjoy their story as much as I did.

Happy reading, everyone.

But now he’s back in justice Creek, too – and his house is just down the hill from hers.  Neither of them is looking for love or romance.  Chloe’s been burned too badly.  And Quinn just doesn’t have the time.

Second-chance sweethearts?

Nicole Castleton was a shrewd businesswoman with a Texas-sized stubborn streak. She needed a husband in a hurry, and no one but her ex, Miguel Mendoza, would do! Yet she had her doubts—sweet, sexy Miguel still shook her to the core of her expensive Castleton boots. And when it came right down to it, she still desired the man beyond words.

Was it a ghost standing on his doorstep? Or could this really be his Nicole? The girl who broke Miguel’s heart ten years ago was back—with a crazy proposal for a strictly business marriage! A desire for payback—and one last round of romance with the one who’d gotten away—tempted Miguel beyond any dollar amount. But this time, he wasn’t so sure he’d be able to walk away from the woman of his dreams…

Dear Reader,

If you’re a fan of the Fortunes of Texas the way I am, you’ll understand how happy I was to be asked to work on the 2013 series, The Fortunes of Texas:  Southern Invasion.  It’s always fun to work with other authors in creating a continuity series, but it’s also nice to return to Red Rock and revisit some of the characters who have become real over the years.

This time, I had the opportunity to write the story of Miguel Mendoza and his high school sweetheart, Nicole Castleton.  Ten years ago, Miguel and Nicole went through a devastating breakup, and Miguel left town to escape the heartbreak.  Now he’s a happy and successful sales exec for Home Run Records in New York.

But Nicole doesn’t let the distance stop her when she’s forced to find a husband – and fast!  She’s also prepared to offer Miguel a deal he can’t refuse.  Trouble is, the chemistry between them is even stronger than ever.  So find a cozy spot to sit back and enjoy another Red Rock romance.

Happy reading!

In love with his best friend’s wife…and baby

Keeping a promise to a dead man isn’t easy. But Ryker Tremaine is determined to keep his word and make amends to his late friend’s wife. When Ryker meets lovely, pregnant Marisa Hayes, she’s still grieving. She doesn’t believe the official report of her husband’s death. And Marisa believes Ryker has the answers she craves.

Bound by secrecy, the hunky CIA operative tries to help Marisa find a sense of normalcy…and uncovers a sizzling attraction! As Ryker discovers the richness of life back on the grid, old secrets threaten. Marisa still seeks answers and Ryker knows if he tells her the truth about her husband’s death—and his role in it—Marisa and her baby may be lost to him forever…

Dear Reader,

An event occurred shortly before I proposed this book:  I faced the very difficult time a family goes through when they don’t know what really happened to a loved one.  It got me to thinking about how I’d feel if I were widowed and didn’t believe the story I was told.

When it happens in your world, there are lots of things you can do to seek the truth.  When it’s a government agency providing the explanation of how your husband died overseas, it’s harder to seek answers.  And it’s even harder when your husband’s friend shows up months later and tells you the same story you don’t believe.

Here we have the story of a pregnant widow who cannot believe she knows the truth, and of her late husband’s friend, who seeks to help her and give her a more satisfying answer.

Sometimes the truth can never be revealed.  But sometimes love can provide a balm.

Financier Grace Preston did fourteen-hour days in New York City. She didn’t do small towns in Australia. Not since she’d fled almost twenty years ago. But when a personal trauma sent her home, with a secret she couldn’t reveal the last person she needed was her first love.

Local cop Cameron Jakowski had loved Grace for most of his life. But he wanted marriage and family and she didn’t. He was small town, while she was big city and lived half a world away. But for now she was right here walking, talking temptation. One he managed to avoid until he made one mistake. He kissed her. And reawakened the passion that could change their lives forever.

Dear Reader,

I’m absolutely delighted to welcome you back to Crystal Point and to my fourth book for Harlequin Special Edition, Date with Destiny.

I’ve had so many emails from readers asking when the beautiful but emotionally closed off Grace Preston will get her happy ending.  I knew it would take a special kind of man to break down her walls and really see the woman most believe is a workaholic ice princess who doesn’t need anything or anyone.  But local cop Cameron Jakowski isn’t fooled, and of course he turns out to be just what she needs!  As they’ve known one another since they were children, he’s more than capable of dealing with her reticence and coolness.  Their journey really is about second chances and the value of family, and of course, love.  I hope you enjoy Grace and Cameron’s story and I invite you to return to Crystal Point in the near future.

I love hearing from readers and can be contacted ia my website at www.helenlacey.com.

Warmest wishes,

Helen Lacey

The Capulets and the Montagues had nothing on the Ryders and the Morgans! But despite the fact that each one was from one of the rival ranching families, Jenny Ryder and Win Morgan had a passionate summer affair four years ago—one that resulted in pregnancy. They got married and promptly lost the baby. Heartbroken, Jenny let herself be talked into divorcing Win…without ever having revealed the marriage to her family—or his.

Now Jenny’s back, and one impulsive night means that Jenny and Win are about to be parents again! This time, they have to fess up. Their future happiness and child depend on it. But Win is keeping his own secret—that “divorce” he and Jenny supposedly got might not be worth the paper it (wasn’t!) printed on…

Dear Reader,

An Early Christmas Gift is a story about second chances – a do-over, if you will – except that the second time around comes after years have passed, maturity is achieved and clarity is more possible.

Jenny Ryder and Win Morgan were born into rival cattle-ranching families.  A relationship between seems impossible.  But when love is involved, is anything possible?  It takes strength to embark on a forbidden journey with someone, even for love, but sometimes your heart has to dictate your actions no matter what your head says.

I hope you enjoy Jenny and Win’s journey.  And I wish you the best holiday possible!

Shana Callahan had long ago given up wishful thinking. A single mom with a checkered past, she knew to be grateful for small gifts. And what Landon Kincaid had given her was far more than that. His unexpected job offer had provided her with so much—a good income, a safe home for her child and the opportunity to start anew in Chance City.

She’d insisted on keeping things strictly business, but the more she got to know her charismatic boss, the harder it became to be his “almost wife.” The town gossip was almost unbearable, but even worse was fighting the longing she felt for Kincaid. Would their December tryst ruin everything…or grant them the ultimate gift?

Dear Reader,

It’s been said that you can’t go home again.  For Shana Callahan that’s a good thing.  Home was difficult, so difficult that she ran away and stayed away for ten years.  Now she’s back in her small hometown of Chance city, all grown up and wanting to make amends.  She’s trying to prove she’s changed and has been walking a gossip-free path for a year now.  She is home, but it’s a new kind of home.

Landon Kincaid wants to help the struggling, pride-filled single mother.  The way he goes about it, however, puts her squarely back in the gossip zone.  But sometimes emotion trumps reputation, and success trumps pride.  And sometimes love is all that matters.

I hope you enjoy Shana and Kincaid’s journey as much I enjoyed sending them on it.

When Karyn Lambert appears on Vaughn Ryder’s doorstep, claiming to be his little girl’s aunt, he can hardly turn her away. Instead, the guarded rancher invites her to stay, and soon they’re engaged in a battle of the sexes, each trying to prove how good they are with little Cassidy…as well as fighting the raging attraction that blooms the instant Karyn steps over the threshold!

For years Vaughn has been focused only on being the perfect father. Now the bubbly personal shopper has taken hold of his heart, and he wonders if they might be able to create the perfect family for Cassidy—and each other. Not just out of blood connections—but out of true love…

Dear Reader,

A Family, At Last is the second book in my Red Valley Ranchers series, and feature another Ryder brother, Vaughan, who is about as opposite of my heroine as anyone can be.  Does that stop them from falling in love, or do their differences enhance the relationship?

Since this is a romance novel, the answer is clear, but how they get there, how they learn to embrace each other’s differences, is the fun part.  Plus, at the heart of the story is six-year-old Cassidy, who was doing fine with just her father but who blooms when Karyn Lambert comes into her life.

I love these kinds of transformations, whether adult or child.  I hope you do, too.
