A Rancher’s Mission

As a volunteer at the Lone Star Cowboy League Boys Ranch, Tanner Barstow helps the troubled young residents turn their lives around. When a local rancher dies and leaves his large property to the boys ranch, Tanner finds himself spending a lot of time with Macy Swanson, whose orphaned nephew, Colby, lives at the ranch. Tanner’s attracted to the newcomer, but she doesn’t fit his plans. Macy longs to have Colby come home with her, but the former city girl worries she won’t be the mother he deserves. Can Tanner help her see that the future she and Colby need is right here—with him?

Dear Reader,

I’m so glad to have another opportunity to participate in a continuity.  Lone Star Cowboy League:  Boys Ranch takes you to Haven, Texas, deep in the heart of Texas Hill Country.

The characters in this book quickly became special to me.  There were moments that their journey took me by surprise.  I hope that you’ll love Macy, Tanner and Colby as much as I do and that the lessons they learn about grief, faith and finding peace will touch your heart and life.

I know from experience that there are so many children in placements like the LSCL Boys Ranch.  They’re waiting to go home, waiting to find homes and trying to find peace.  If this book touches your heart, then allow your life to touch the lives of those children in the foster care system.

The Secret Next Door

Nurse Gena Satterfield knew raising her rebellious nephew, Derrick, would be tough, but moving to Gabriel’s Crossing was supposed to help ease the transition into their new reality. That was before she realized her new neighbor was Quinn Buchanon—her teenage crush, the town’s onetime star quarterback…and Derrick’s father. Her sister’s dying wish was that Gena keep this secret. Yet watching Quinn connect with the boy and penetrate his angry walls, Gena begins to see him in a whole new light. Now, torn between the truth and the promise she made, Gena has to follow her heart. And hope they can all heal together…as a family.

Dear Reader,

Some years ago, a minister of my acquaintance required post-op pain medication, a perfectly legitimate use of strong narcotics.  Unfortunately, after a time, this man became addicted to the pills.  When he could no longer get the pills, he began to use illegal drugs to ease his pain and feed the addiction that had taken hold of him.  He lost his ministry, his family and eventually his life.  No one who knew him could believe this had happened to such a good, God-fearing man.  But it did.

With Quinn Buchanon’s story, I wanted to address this real issue that is sometimes considered taboo in Christian circles.  The truth, of course, is that Christians are humans subject to the same fragilities as everyone else.  Our victory is that we have a means of escape, a Savior if we reach out to Him and ask for help.

I hope you’ve enjoyed Lone Star Dad, and if you or someone you love struggles with a drug problem, please reach out.  Hope in Jesus is waiting.

Finding Her Way Home

After fifteen years away, Dr. Caroline Duer is nervous about returning to her hometown. The veterinarian might be able to save stranded sea turtles, but she can’t convince her dad of her good intentions. And when Caroline meets darling Izzie Clark, she encounters similar suspicion from the young girl’s father. Former coast guard commander Weston Clark had his life upended by Izzie’s mother. He won’t go through the same pain again. But Izzie isn’t the only one tumbling head over heels for the enigmatic Caroline. And if she can release the pain of the past, she just might be the missing piece Weston and his daughter have been searching for.

Dear Reader,

Years ago, a teacher friend gave me a nautilus shell.  This friend struggled against the darkness and battled sadness, but told no one.  Tragically, one day he chose to end his life.  I’ve since pondered the meaning behind the unique design of the nautilus.  This story is an outgrowth of that takeaway.  I believe it is important to talk about depression to combat the lie that we are alone.  I hope this story illustrates the truth that it’s okay to ask for help.  Life is often hard, but God is always good.

Like King David, the prophet Elijah and the Apostle Paul, Caroline struggles with depression.  She grapples with the implications of her family heritage.  If Caroline’s story describes your current situation, I pray you will seek the advice of a medical professional and wise, spiritual counsel, too, so that you might partake of the richer, fuller, abundant life God desires for you to experience.  Life is worth living.

During the writing of this story, I’ve cared for my aging father, who suffered with advanced Alzheimer’s, and I’ve pondered the legacy I will one day leave my children.  My father’s homegoing occurred on February 12, 2016.  I don’t know what the future holds for you or me.  But I’ve learned that I must trust in the God who holds us – our hopes, our dreams, our loved ones and our lives – in the palm of His hand.  The safest place we can rest.

Why?  Because you and I, we are His beloved, cherished, always precious children.  Ultimately, a heritage of faith is the best legacy I’ve inherited from my family.  Like the multichambered nautilus, I hope the cross section of your past will encourage you as to how far you’ve traveled.  And inspire you as to how far you may yet go.

I hope you have enjoyed taking this journey with me, Caroline and Weston.  I would also love to hear from you.  You may email me at lisa@lisacarterauthor.com or visit www.liscarterauthor.com.

Wishing you fair winds and following seas,

Lisa Carter
